2023 County Cup Draw (SF)

There were some very close matches in the quarter finals, with Aldermaston 2 nearly completing another giant killing, as they led Wellington 1 by two matches to nil and were leading 2/0 in one of the remaining matches. However, Wellington 1 fought back and won 3/2 (14/8) to progress. Aldermaston 1 also had a great match against Nuffield 1, again narrowly winning 3/2, again 14/8 including the 5 bonus points.

Wellington 2 were also very unlucky not to beat Maidenhead 1, with 11 games having less than a 3 point margin! Whilst Reading University only won one tie against Charters Arena, two matches went the distance, so they too can count themselves very unlucky.

In the plate competition there were unfortunately 3 walk-overs given, but Caversham BCSC appeared to have fun in their first versus seconds clash, with the first team narrowly winning 3/2.

Again, feedback was generally extremely positive for this new tournament format, with players often commenting on the more friendly and fun nature of the competition. 2023 County Cup Draw (QF)

Round 1 got off to a flying start, with most of the higher teams going through. However, there was a ‘giant killing’, with Division 3 side Aldermaston 2 beating Premier Division giants Temple 1!

Most importantly, feedback was generally extremely positive for this new tournament format and most players seemed to really enjoy themselves and we are unaware of any issues.

Squash Bonanza at Dedworth Middle School

Following the closure of Windsor & Eton Squash Club many years ago, we are working with Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead Council to deliver squash programmes and facilities in their borough. As part of this, and building on our Mini Squash Court experiences, we are working with Melior Sports to design a new and unique semi-permanent Mini Squash Court solution for Berkshire Schools (please click here for an initial draft overview).

Whilst this work is ongoing, we agreed to complete a pilot event at Dedworth Middle School at the end of April 2023, showcasing our existing (mobile) Mini Squash Court and delivering our schools programme. Assisted by Sports Leaders from The Windsor Boys School, Craig Banyard (our County Development Officer) ran the programme all week for the pupils at Dedworth and neighbouring schools. Whilst Craig coached on the Mini Squash Court, the Sports Leaders coached on the rebound nets and ran team events, such as Squicket, for a total class size of approximately 30 pupils per session. To see more, please watch the video below (please note that the last two players on the video are not tall students, but two teachers who wanted to join in!)

We are hoping that the success of this project encourages Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead Council to support schools in their borough with the provision of a squash bundle, including one of the new Mini Squash Courts, rebound nets, equipment and coaching support for appropriate schools. We are now in the process of discussing the details and hope to role out the programme from September 2023.

After any schools programme we run, it is always important to have a pathway to an activity at a local club, so children can develop their skills. Following this extremely successful week, we invited Dedworth pupils to attend our fully funded 6 week Squash Stars course at Bisham Abbey. Despite the inconvenient location for Dedworth parents, 26 children signed up for this course and we had to close our booking system! Craig delivered week one of this course last week and it is going well already, with all the children having fun and parents helping out too. We hope to add some pictures soon and run further courses in future. Watch this space…

2023 County Cup Draw (R1)

This year’s competition will work differently. Firstly, there will be no seedings and all teams will be drawn ‘out of a bag’. Secondly, all matches will be played on a handicapped basis (to 15 points), with the handicapping set by SquashLevels. For full details of the competition please click here.
