Sad news about Steve Brackley

With great sadness, we confirm the passing of our dear friend Steve Brackley who recently passed away after a short illness.

‘Brackers’, as we affectionately knew him, competed for Berkshire for over 40 years – playing at junior, senior and master’s levels. A tenacious but patient player who competed with humour and good sportsmanship, always with his lovely wry sense of humour and calm edgy style.

Steve grew up in Caversham and lived in the Reading area all his life. In the Berkshire league, he played for Greenacre Squash Club for around 30 years and, in the Oxfordshire league, for Wallingford Squash Club for over 20 years. Wherever he played, he earned much devotion from his fellow teammates and opponents alike.

Brackers was also a keen and talented cricketer, with all round ability and was an athletic wicket keeper. He was also a much-appreciated tennis and squash coach at Downe House School for 15 years, where his services to sporting education will be sadly missed. He leaves a huge void in many of our lives, no less than his partner Shelley, daughters Eliza 12 and Ruby 9, brother Paul and parents Peter and Jean, to whom our deepest sympathies and condolences are extended at this extremely sad time.

Robbed from us far too young.

This tribute was written by Steve’s good friend Steve Dodridge, with the sentiments echoed by everyone on our committee.
