Ex-World #21 joins Committee as new Women’s Captain!

We’re delighted to announce that Carla Khan, renowned for her illustrious career as a professional squash player, has joined the Berkshire Squash Committee as the new Women’s Captain. She takes over from Sophie Beake who had been in the position for 2 years. Thanks for your service Sophie!

Joining the Committee was a natural progression for Carla, fuelled by her children’s passion for the game and her desire to contribute to its growth.

She eagerly embraced the opportunity to make a difference and help foster a vibrant squash community in Berkshire.

Reflecting on her introduction to squash, she recounted how she discovered the sport at the age of 12, guided by her father’s encouragement. Despite initial struggles, her unwavering dedication propelled her to excel, eventually becoming a top-ranked player on both national and international stages. Highest career ranking World #21.

Acknowledging the profound influence of her parents, Carla emphasised their unwavering support throughout her career, which included extensive travel and rigorous training. She wasn’t told initially, but she hails from a distinguished squash lineage, with her grandfather, Azam Khan, and great-uncle, Hashim Khan, leaving an indelible mark on the sport as World Champions.

Among her most memorable achievements was her victory over Nicol David, an eight-time World Champion, in the Irish Open of 2004. This triumph underscored Khan’s talent and resilience, solidifying her place among squash’s elite.

However, Khan’s contributions extend beyond her accomplishments on the court. As a coach, she has traversed the globe, imparting her knowledge and empowering aspiring female players in countries like Iran, Pakistan, and the United States.

In addition to her coaching endeavours, she remains deeply committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity within squash. Proudly donning a hijab, she champions the sport as a welcoming space for individuals of all backgrounds and abilities.

As she embarks on this new chapter with the Berkshire Squash Committee, Carla’s passion for the game and dedication to its development promise to inspire future generations of squash enthusiasts. Through her leadership and unwavering commitment, she continues to leave an indelible mark on the sport she loves.
